This program, which will focus on Electric Utilities, will examine climate impacts on our electrical infrastructure, including powerplants, substations, transformers, sensors, wires, conduits and poles. Our electrical infrastructure is aging, with 70% of transformers and transmission lines over 25 years old, and received a grade of “D+” in the 2017 Infrastructure Report Card. This network is especially vulnerable to climate impacts. Extreme weather events, such as the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, have exposed some of these vulnerabilities, but chronic changes in our natural environment, such as more frequent days over 90°F, also put our electrical system in jeopardy. A recent study from the MIT Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change and MIT Lincoln Laboratory found that for a background 1°C rise in temperature, the lifetime of a large power transformer decreases by 10%. It’s time to reinvest in resilient, sustainable electrical systems.

The program will present the potential impacts to large power transformers (LPTs) from climate warming. We will hear from an Electrical Utility Provider on what steps they are taking to mitigate risk and adapt to climate change impacts, both chronic and acute. You will learn what steps are being taken a the site-specific and building level to prepare for climate change and what adaptation strategies are being implemented to promote short- and long-term resilience. The program will end with a discussion and Q&A session with the presenters.
